In the old days, the Willaha had its own sidin’ on the Santa Fe line from Williams, AZ up to the Grand Canyon. Nowadays, the pens and chutes are still used durin’ gatherin’ and brandin’, but its truck’s waitin’ for their load, not the train.

Alone Among Friends

Edition of 100 |14 left, 2 artist proof

Bob McNelly owned the Willaha Ranch about 30 miles south of the Grand Canyon in Northern Arizona. His boys run the place now. It’s not so big anymore, but it’s a place that hangs on to the old traditions. This Phippen Award winning painting shows Bob workin’ the herd on the western part of the ranch. He knew every animal on the place by sight, so he really could be “Alone Among Friends”.

$45

If you’re not straddlin’ a horse, you’re probably not workin’ too hard. This is the signature piece of the contemporary watercolor style of C. K. Brothers. Ridin’ the Rails is number one of a ten painting series commissioned by Dr. Lawrence Keefe of Tucson and dedicated to those rare bits of leisure time found on a workin’ ranch.

The McNelly boys own the Willaha Ranch since their dad passed away. Times have been tough in Northern Arizona the last dozen years. Dry winters have left slim graze and empty tanks. Seems like the summer monsoons bring more wind than rain.

One thing that’s certain on a workin’ ranch is a day don’t go by without somethin’ comin’ loose, slippin’ off, or breakin’.
